Clinical Placements
The Undergraduate Centre:
- Provides clinical placements to all Undergraduate students for Cardiff University School of Medicine
- Provide teaching facilities
- Co-ordinate teaching timetables
- Provide inductions at the start of each placement
- Provide support to Medical Students
- Provide support to consultants to deliver teaching
- Provide feedback sessions at the end of each placement
- Collects the students' marks at the end of each placement and forwards them to Cardiff University Medical School
Year 1 Students
Year 1 students will come to UHW each Thursday for a one day placement over 14 weeks from January to May. They will go to the following specialities:
- A&E
- Child Health
- Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- Care of the Elderly
- Medicine
- Surgery
Year 2 Students
Year 2 students attend two programmes.
- Foundation Clinical Skills Module: Students are divided into small groups each morning and are given a Consultant led tutorial on how to examine and take histories. Following the teaching session, students will be sent to either a Medical or Surgical Ward to practice the techniques learnt from the morning session. Students will be allocated a week on a Medical Ward and a week on a Surgical Ward. In addition, each group will spend a day in MAU.
- Nursing Attachment: This is a week placement over 4 weeks. These students will be placed within the surgery department each week. During their placement, they will be required to shadow one of the ward nurses to gain experience of their role in the medical team. The students are required to work a full shift, taking on board nursing duties.
Year 3 Students
Year 3 Students experience six week blocks over four rotations. The modules covered for this year are:
- GPMED
- ROSS - Rheumatology, Orthopaedics, Surgical Systems
- MEDCR
Year 4 Students
Year 4 Students will experience a five week placement over five rotations from September to May. The modules covered are:
Child Health
- Reproductive Medicine
- Psychological Medicine
- Geriatric Medicine / Neurology
- MOSS: Dermatology, ENT, Haematology, Infectious Diseases and Ophthalmology
- Additionally year 4 students are expected to attend a Specialist Clinical Contact Module.
Year 5 Students
Diagnostic Synthesis Surgery (DSS) / Diagnostic Synthesis Medicine (DSM)
DSS and DSM is a seven week placement over two rotations from June to July. DSS students are split into nine groups of four and allocated to a pair of Consultants. DSM students are split into groups of five and designated to various wards.
For both groups, in addition to ward allocations, they have timetabled lunchtime teaching sessions.
