Undergraduate Centre MWOP

The Medical Work Observation Programme (MWOP)

For the last three years a formal Medical Work Observation Programme has been organised for local sixth form students from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, who wish to apply to study medicine at University.

The programme runs for four weeks in June/July at University Hospital of Wales and for four weeks at University Hospital Llandough This sort of placement is now an essential requirement when applying to UCAS.

Due to the high demand we are restricting places to those students with a real interest in studying medicine and who are considering an application to UCAS for Medicine.

If you wish to apply, please ensure you are able to meet ALL the following criteria:

  • Must be at least 17 years old by end of August 2011
  • Must be studying AS levels or equivalent in relevant subject
  • Must have at least 3 A* at GCSE
  • Must be able to provide evidence of GCSE Results (or exams of equivalent level) to support application
  • Must be able to provide evidence from the school/college to support application
  • Must be committed to the full 5 day programme

What the Programme Involves

It is an exciting opportunity for the students to observe working within a clinical environment.

The Undergraduate Centre organises a weekly timetable for each student and attaches them to a variety of clinical teams.

Students will witness procedures in theatres, observe laboratory practice, join consultants on ward rounds or outpatient clinics and participate in whole group teaching lectures.

Student Feedback

At the end of each week the students complete feedback forms on their experiences at Llandough or UHW. Previous comments include:

  • "I found the week very beneficial as I've learned a lot and have been made aware of a huge amount of departments in Medicine that I didn't know existed."
  • "It has made me more determined to achieve my academic grades as I now know that Medicine is the right choice for me."
  • "The Medical Work Observation Programme was extremely helpful and interesting. It showed me all aspects of Medicine both good and bad. I have also been made to realise the importance of team work and communication skills."
  • "The variety of departments we visited allowed me to experience the daily life of a doctor or professional."
