UHW@40

Her Majesty the Queen at the opening of UHWIT has welcomed thousands of new lives into the world and has been around for as long as many people can remember but what is the story behind the birth of the University Hospital of Wales?

This November Wales’ biggest hospital marks an impressive 40 years of caring for people from Cardiff and beyond.

It was on November 19th 1971 that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh came to the Welsh capital to open a pioneering new hospital that would lead the way not only in how care and treatment was delivered, but also in how the next generation of doctors, nurses and other health professionals would learn their trade.

Staff, patients and those who played a part in developing the massive site have come forward to share their memories about how it came to fruition, the colourful life it has lead and the important part it has played in millions of lives.

Here you can read, listen and share their memories and discover how Wales’ biggest hospital became such an important part of Welsh life and what its future could hold.
