Baptist Minister
My earlier years were spent in industry, having trained as a mechanical engineer. As I continued with my studies the opportunity opened for me to engage in teaching in secondary schools. In 1976 having felt called to pastoral ministry, I began three years of training at the South Wales Baptist College. I then combined my teaching in school and college with my church work in Ely. In 1983 I was invited to become the minister at Carmel Baptist Church, South Ely where I have continued to serve until the present time. In March 1990 I was invited to become the Free Church Chaplain at Lansdowne Hospital Cardiff, where I served until the patients and staff were transferred to the new St David’s Hospital in 2002.
I served as hospital chaplain at the Ely Hospital, for patients with learning difficulties from 1995 until it was closed in December 1998. The patients here were mainly long stay patients, enabling the chaplain to build a rapport with the residents. I was able help with activities and we had Sunday services each week in which the patients were able to take part.
I continue to care for the patients and staff on the wards and in the day hospital in St David’s. Together with the Occupational Therapy department, we hold Wednesday Group meetings in the chapel for patients; this is partly devotional and therapeutic. We also arrange festival services in the atrium for larger congregations that include relatives and staff.
