| A native of the Rhondda, Paul began his NHS career as a nurse in the mid 1970s. Promotion to Charge Nurse soon followed before Paul changed tack, taking a degree in education and spending a number of years as a nurse teacher. His education background stood Paul in good stead for his first foray into general management in the late 1980s, when he worked on the development of nurse education in the university sector, followed by a role in quality and contracting at the former Mid Glamorgan Health Authority and a Director of Business in a Community Trust. Paul bolstered his experience by undertaking some work in Europe via an Erasmus programme and in Lesotho and Swaziland, experiences which gave him a fresh perspective on the Welsh NHS. Since that time, Paul has developed a wealth of experience in business and planning roles, including a three-year stint as Interim Chief Executive of the former North Glamorgan NHS Trust leading its merger with the then Pontypridd and Rhondda NHS Trust in 2008. Paul is currently the Executive Director of Planning and Deputy Chief Executive at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and has added to his portfolio the role Interim Chief Operating Officer. Paul is married with one son and two granddaughters, who take up a happy amount of his spare time. |
