Nephrology and Transplant - Patient Information

Patient Information

The Nephrology and Transplant Directorate is responsible for the management of the UHW Renal Unit. The Directorate consists of a number of departments providing specialist treatment for a variety of services to renal patients.

The Unit is responsible for the care of the patient from the first referral, pre-dialysis and, where applicable, through any Renal Replacement Therapy chosen by the patient, and on to regular follow-up checks in one of our Outpatient Clinics.

Further information on the various Clinical Areas and Specialties is detailed below.

Clinical Areas

Inpatients

Ward B5
The principal Ward for renal care is B5; it is a very busy ward environment and is divided into two key areas.

Transplant Unit
The 10 bedded renal transplant unit comprises two four bedded areas and two cubicles. During the first days post transplant, we monitor the patients closely, using cardiac and invasive monitoring as required. In the Summer of 2010, the Unit will move to a purpose-built, 21 bedded ward.

B5 Nephrology
This 27 bedded area, with outpatient haemodialysis facilities, cares for all patients with acute or chronic renal disease.

Each area is led by a Ward Manager.

Outpatients

Outpatient Clinic: Suite 18
Suite 18 is a shared clinic also used by Urology, so patients can expect to see two receptionists.  There is always a qualified nurse in Suite 18 working alongside other healthcare professionals. The staff are friendly and welcoming.

Transplant clinics are held Monday to Friday morning.
Nephrology clinics are held Monday to Friday afternoon.

A phlebotomy service (taking blood samples) is provided in Suite 18 on Monday, Thursday and Friday.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, this service is available in Suite 15.  In the Summer of 2010, the Outpatient Suite will move to its new location.  Further information on the move will soon be made available.

Main Dialysis Unit: Suite 19
Suite 19 is a 21 station clinical area, providing Outpatient Haemodialysis.

The Unit Manager is Sr Sara Scale.

The Unit reception contact number is 029 2074 8465.
