The Integrated Sexual Health service offers clinics both in the Cardiff Royal Infirmary (CRI) on Newport Road (ISH CRI), and in a number of other sites around Cardiff (community ISH).
ISH CRI clinics provide a full sexual health service, except the provision of some forms of contraception. Community ISH Clinics provide contraception and limited STI testing. Find out more details about the services provided in each setting.
Cervical Smear Tests
We recommend that you attend your GP surgery for your smear test. However, if you have difficulty obtaining a smear test from your GP, you may attend a
community ISH clinic.
Accessing community ISH
Take a look at the
ISH Clinics leaflet to find out more, and see where they are located on our
service map.
Accessing ISH CRI
At ISH CRI we hold a number of clinics throughout the week, and provide open access (self-referral) clinics on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. Slots at these clinics are reserved via our text request system (available from 6.00pm, Sunday 1 July 2012).
Please note that we aim to see people within 2 hours of the attendance time slot, but the clinic gets very busy. We apologise if we keep you waiting.
Check out our full opening times.
People with urgent problems who attend the clinic without an appointment will be seen by a nurse for triage. Advice or an appointment will be allocated according to the urgency of the problem.
We also have a limited number of booked appointments (Tuesday pm, Wednesday am and Thursday pm). These appointments are primarily for people with special circumstances. These appointments are booked by telephone.
If you require an HIV test only, you can attend the clinic without an appointment between the following times:
- Monday / Tuesday / Thursday / Friday 10.00 -11.30am, or
- Tuesday / Thursday 2.30 - 3.30pm.
If you would like to contact the clinic, please telephone 029 2033 5208 between 2.00 - 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday.
ISH is an extremely busy unit, and the staff are always very pleased to receive positive comments such as the one below from a recent attendee to the service.
"Due to some very unfortunate circumstances I had to visit the ISH clinic today. I was very scared and upset upon arrival and an emotional wreck the whole time that I was there. I just wanted to send a message to thank and commend your staff for the care that I received. From the minute I walked through the door until the minute I left, I was treated with respect and dignity by everyone that I came into contact with. The lady on reception was really kind to me as were all of the nurses. I had to re-live some unpleasant memories and your staff were very supportive to me and even provided me with a healthcare advisor to talk to in order to help me calm down. They made me feel normal and helped me to try and come to terms with things. Not at any point did I feel like I was being judged. Thank you"
