Welcome to Paediatric Diabetes
The Paediatric Diabetes Service is based within the Department of Child Health at the University Hospital of Wales. The multi-disciplinary team cares for babies, children and teenagers, as well as their families, with all types of diabetes. Our service covers patients who live in Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan and the lower Rumney Valley.
What we Offer
For Patients:
- Support and education, tailored to individual needs at diagnosis as well as ongoing education as the patient gets older
- Dedicated weekly outpatient clinics for children and teenagers in the University Hospital of Wales
- A monthly out-reach clinic held in Ystrad Mynach Hospital for patients from the lower Rumney Valley
- A monthly nurse-led clinic for patients requiring extra input between routine outpatient appointments
- A dedicated handover clinic for teenagers, aged approx 17 years, run jointly with the adult diabetes team to promote a smooth move to the adult diabetes service.
- Access to ongoing dietetic advice at most out-patient clinics
- Paediatric Diabetes Nurse support in the patients’ home when applicable
- Support and education for extended family members, nursery/school teachers, babysitters, friends etc
- Specialist knowledge for managing patients on insulin pump therapy
- Out of hours telephone advice service for patients and staff
