NURSES from Cardiff and Vale UHB are in the running for a national award.
Pip and the Stoma care team have put a huge amount of work into making sure patients are at the forefront of developments within the Stoma Care Nursing Service.
The team of seven specialist nurses provide support for patients who require a stoma (an artificial opening in the abdomen) due to bowel and bladder diseases such as cancer or inflammatory bowel disease.
Jane said: “The service aim is to manage the caseload of patients with complex bowel and bladder problems living within Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan and to provide support for both stoma patients and their families in all aspect of bowel and ostomy care.
“The Cardiff and Vale Stoma Care Nursing service highlights the benefit to patients when there is greater collaborative working both with commercial sector, community nursing and care services and social services.
“We’re really pleased to have been shortlisted for the award. It is nice to know that the work of the stoma care team and everyone at Cardiff and Vale is being recognised.”
Jane and Pip have been working with colleagues in a variety of sectors to improve the care they provide. They have created a patient pathway which has improved communication and continuity of care between the hospital and community service groups.
They are continuing to work with GPs and pharmacists to improve knowledge and understanding of the complex care required, ensuring the correct use of products. This benefits both patient and health board by providing appropriate product use in a cost effective way.
Linda Walker, Cardiff and Vale UHB’s Divisional Nurse for Surgery, said: “Well done to both Jane and Pip, This is excellent news and is a credit to all the hard work and commitment they have shown to their patients and the service.”
The pair will travel to London for the award ceremony at BMA House on Friday (21st September 2012).
