UHW Blood Boost

STAFF and visitors to Wales’ biggest hospital have been thanked for becoming horizontal heroes.
Hundreds of people came forward to donate blood during the Welsh Blood Services’ three day session at the University Hospital of Wales.
 
David Francis, Chairman of Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, said 658 people attended the sessions.
 
He said: “I would like to thank all those who took the time to come forward and take part in what is a vital, life saving, service.
 
“I know first hand how professional and helpful the Blood Service staff are and I thank them for the excellent work they do.
 
“I am glad that so many of our staff have led by example and helped save a life and I would encourage others to do the same.”
 
During the three day session at UHW 78 new donors were signed up and 28 people decide to join the bone marrow donor register.
 
Ian Reynolds, Head of Blood Collection at the Welsh Blood Service, said: “Thank you to all the staff and visitors who came forward and gave blood at the University Hospital of Wales, over 650 life-saving donations were generously donated.
 
“Every week the Welsh Blood Service supply over 2000 pints of blood (red cells), platelets and plasma to meet the needs of hospitals and patients in Wales. The University Hospital of Wales is our biggest customer.”
