Medical Rehabilitation Unit

Aim of the Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU)

Rehabilitation can be a lengthy process which requires the patient's full and active participation in all daily activities. The aim is to establish a safe discharge, whether it is to a patient's own home or to a Residential or Nursing Home.

What we do

Once you are ready for rehabilitation, you will be assessed by either a Doctor or Liaison Nurse in the acute hospital. Once assessed, and you and your relatives are happy, and if there is bed available, you will be transferred by ambulance to the ground floor Medical Rehabilitation Unit (MRU) in West Wing, opposite the Cardiff Royal Infirmary Building.

When you arrive in MRU, you will be greeted by a nurse who will show you to your bed. Your Named Nurse will introduce herself to you when she is next on duty. After an assessment by the Multidisciplinary Team, which will take about one week, you will be given an estimated date for your discharge. The whole team will work along with you towards this date.

We offer a challenging working environment for staff, caring for patients who require rehabilitation following an acute medical admission. Our patients have various medical conditions and their individual needs differ considerably.
