Welcome to the Midwifery Led Birth Unit
Our Midwifery Led Birth unit (MLU) is located alongside other maternity facilities at the University Hospital of Wales. A senior midwife and a maternity care assistant are always on duty in the unit. Women who decide to give birth in the MLU are normally women who have had no additional risk factors either at booking or during pregnancy, with a clinically well-grown baby at term.
The MLU has birthing pools: it has been found that women who labour in water find this one of the most beneficial methods of pain relief. Some women also choose to give birth in water. The emphasis is on normality in a home from home environment, where women are able to eat and drink and encouraged to move around during labour. Partners, where possible, can stay until the mother and baby are ready to be transferred home. Other relatives may visit during visiting hours, which are 2pm-3pm and 6pm-8pm.

Secure access doors and baby tagging are in place on the ward to ensure the safety of babies.
