Maternity

Welcome to Maternity Services

Maternity Services in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board are provided by teams of staff including midwives, obstetricians, anaesthetists, neonatologists, radiologists and other support staff.  The pattern of care provided to patients will depend on each woman's individual needs. Each year around 6,400 babies are born in the UHB either at home, in the Midwifery Led Birth Unit or in the Consultant Led Unit.  Following an extensive review of our Maternity Services our clinical services have been developed to meet the needs of local women and their families.

They receive comments and feedback from mothers and aim to help improve maternity services. New members are always welcome and if you are interested in joining this group either telephone Anne Morgans, Head Clinical Governance Midwife on 029 2074 5190 or by e mail to anne.morgans@wales.nhs.uk

Supervision of midwives

The purpose of statutory supervision of midwives is to protect the public and to support and promote good midwifery practice, ensuring appropriate care is available to all women and their babies.  Every practising midwife has a supervisor of midwives who will support professional practice through up to date evidence based care. The UHB employs supervisors of midwives on behalf of the Local Supervising Authority, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales.

The role of the supervisor of midwives is instrumental in the continuing improvement of the quality of care given to women and their babies.  Effective supervision empowers midwifery as a profession, and through support, counseling and guidance enables midwives to provide high quality care in a variety of settings to meet the individual needs of women of childbearing age.

A supervisor of midwives is available on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This ensures midwives have access to support and advice.  If a member of the public wishes to speak to a supervisor of midwives, please contact the UHW switchboard by telephoning 029 2074 7747.
