Martyn Waygood

Martyn Waygood was born in Swansea and educated at Bishop Gore school, before attending University College of Wales Aberystwyth, where he graduated in law in 1977. He also has a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Glamorgan.
 
Martyn worked for a number of years in the private sector, culminating in the role of Trade Marketing Manager with the Coca Cola Company.
 
He underwent a change of career in the late 1980s and qualified as a solicitor, entering the Magistrates' Court Service in Southampton where he was a legal adviser, later transferring to Lymington and the New Forest.  
 
Martyn continued in the service, becoming Principal Legal Adviser in Gwent and Deputy Clerk to the Justices in Swansea.  He finally became Clerk to the Justices in Cardiff in 2000 with overall responsibility for the running of that court.   
 
While in this position, Martyn was seconded by the Department for International Development in 2006 and 2007 to be part of a criminal justice team sent to the kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa to make recommendations for improvements in the criminal justice system there.
 
He worked as part of a strategic development team, which also consisted of members of the Crown Prosecution Service, police and probation  from the UK.
 
He left the Magistrates' Court Service in March 2008 to concentrate on a judicial career. He is a non practising solicitor and a judge specialising in asylum and immigration appeals.
