IVF Wales egg and sperm research projects in collaboration with Cardiff University
IVF Wales is proud to work with Cardiff University .
Professors Karl Swann and Tony Lai and their team are studying how the sperm initiates development when it fuses with an egg during fertilization. Studies are concentrating upon a particular protein in the sperm called PLCzeta. This protein was discovered by this research group in Cardiff University .
The PLCzeta protein is delivered by the sperm into the egg, and it has been shown to cause the biochemical changes that make the egg develop into an embryo. The research team want to understand how PLCzeta works in human eggs, and to see if a deficiency in PLCzeta can explain any problems in conception. The research will help understand why fertilization is sometimes not successful, and it may lead to new ways of treating infertility.
You will receive more information about the research projects in your patient information pack and if you wish to take part you will be required to complete additional research consent forms. If you have any further questions, one of the embryology team are always available to answer any of queries regarding the research projects.
