Health Improvement and Patient Outcome (HIPO) Project

Welcome to the Health Improvement and Patient Outcome (HIPO) Project

The HIPO project is an ongoing process that allows the UHB to continuously monitor and improve care.  It was set up in collaboration with an external research company who fund the project entirely, with no cost to the NHS.  In return the research company receive an anonymised dataset of the respondents.

The project was implemented in early 2002 and has since been collecting data on patient satisfaction and quality of life of those patients attending the University Hospitals of Wales and Llandough, Rookwood Hospital and Cardiff Royal Infirmary.  Inpatients and daycases are sent a postal survey, while outpatients are given a survey at their appointment.  In addition to routine data collection the HIPO project is also involved in various specialised studies.

The results are fedback to the UHB in the form of routine reports and in the case of specialised studies to the relevant department.

Aims

The main aim of HIPO is to provide the UHB with feedback on patient views.

This allows managers to:

  • identify areas that may need improvement.
  • review aspects of care where patients are very satisfied with the service.
  • assess performance.
  • monitor deterioration/improvements in care provided from a patient perspective.
  • evaluate which areas are most important to the patient/public.
  • request data that may be useful to evaluate how we provide services.
  • undertake specific studies on areas they require additional information on.
  • analyse quality of life in numerous disease groups.
