Parent Education

Parenting education is provided in a variety of settings.  At every contact visit the midwife will provide information about public health issues, keeping well during your pregnancy, preparation for the birth and the early days following discharge home with a new baby.  See our Parentcraft poster for details of classes taking place in local leisure centres.

A more structured setting is offered in the form of antenatal workshops, which take place in a variety of settings. During these sessions, the workshop group explores topics around preparing for the birth and emphasis on normality.  Included in the day are self-help skills and coping with labour, when additional care is required with medical support during the birth.

Parents are able to work together in groups exploring how to meet the needs of their new baby and how to respond to different situations to keep their baby safe.  Your midwife can also advise you of Parentcraft classes available.

Community Midwives also provide antenatal breast-feeding workshops.  These sessions are held over two weeks and bring together pregnant women to discuss some of the key elements to support successful breast-feeing.

If you want to attend any of these groups your Community Midwife will give you details of dates and times.
