Val Willmott, a clinical nurse specialist with the UHB’s paediatric Ear Nose and Throat team, has been using the new tools developed as part of the Ask 3 Questions campaign with patients. She believes they will help both patients and medical staff.
Val said: “It’s definitely a good thing for the patient. It engages them in all aspects of the treatment and makes them more aware of the options available to them but also the risks and benefits that come with them.
“It means everyone is more aware of what is involved and has a better understanding about the care they are receiving.
“It’s better for patients and their families that they are fully prepared of what is going to happen and it’s only right that we are having those conversations.
“Some people don’t like to ask they just take what the doctor says but we’re encouraging them to ask and there’s more communication between the two and they are getting the information they need.
“I think this work could be a real help in many areas.”
