Podiatry

Welcome to the Podiatry service for patients in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

The podiatry department has over 45 podiatrists supported by several podiatry clinical assistants/technicians and a team of clerical officers.

We offer a wide range of inpatient, outpatient and community services for both adults and children with various conditions and pathology affecting the foot and lower limb. These services are provided throughout Cardiff and the Vale.

 

Who do we work with?

Podiatry is defined as a field of healthcare devoted to the study and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle, leg, knee, hip and spine. The role of the Podaitrist is to maintain and improve tissue viability, loco-motor function, to alleviate pain and reduce the impact of disability, increase and maintain mobility and independence and promoting health and well being for a wide range of patients.

Podiatrists are professionals responsible for:

  • Patient assessment and risk classification
  • Diagnosis
  • Evaluation and treatment
  • Empowerment
  • Collaborative preventative strategies and health education
  • Implementing evidence based practice
 

Community Service


Providing assessment and treatment for predominantly high and medium medical risk patients. This includes a wide range of conditions including wounds and nail pathology; Corn and callus debridement. Provision of diabetic and vascular screening and non cast insoles for footwear.

 

The High Risk Foot


Assessment of the diabetic foot including vascular and neurological screening.

Tissue viability and wound management, working in conjunction with members of the Multidisciplinary Team, including diabetic, vascular and orthopaedic departments.

 

Musculoskeletal Conditions


Biomechanical and gait assessment for musculoskeletal pathology and deformity.
Provision of functional and total contact foot orthoses.
Working as part of the Multidisciplinary Treatment Team along with orthopaedic, orthotic, physiotherapy departments.

 

Podopaediatrics


Musculoskeletal assessment/gait analysis for the treatment of:

  • Developmental abnormalities e.g. Genu Valgum/Flat Feet
  • Gait conditions e.g. Intoe Gait
  • Overuse Injuries e.g. Shin Splints
  • Paediatric leg and foot pain e.g. Osgood Schlatter's Disease
  • Advice for common Foot Disorders including minor skin lesions such as verrucae and fungal infections
  • Hammer Toes, Hallux Adbucto Valgus (Bunion's), Curly Toes

The above includes diagnosis prescription, manufacture and provision of relevant orthotic devices, which improves foot and lower extremity function.

Podiatry at Home


We provide a patient centred service incorporating a tailored treatment plan, education and empowerment supporting the wellbeing and quality of life of patients whe frequently exhibit complex medical and social needs and are likely to be vulnerable, frail and at risk. We work closely with other services including:

  • Elderly Care Assessment Team (ECAS)
  • Cardiff East Locality Team (CELT)

Which promote independence and rehabilitation on discharge from hospital. We also work with Age Concern and the local health board as part of falls prevention programme.

 

The Foot in Rheumatology


Specialist podiatrists work in the Rheumatology Musculoskeletal Treatment Team, providing education and treatment for complex musculoskeletal pathology as a consequence of systemic disease.

 

Nail Surgery


A specialist service providing the permanent removal of toenails affected by a range of pathologies. This treatment involves nail removal and chemical nail bed ablation under local anaesthetic.

 

Mental Health


We provide a range of foot health services and education programmes at sites across Cardiff and the Vale.

The Podiatry Department within Cardiff and the Vale, also have Podiatrists engaged in Research and Development.
