Iorwerth Jones Centre

 

The Iorwerth Jones Centre is a 45 bedded unit in the community of Llanishen, Cardiff, comprising three mental health wards.

 

The philosophy of the unit is to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care that meets assessed individual needs, and respects each person’s dignity and choice with the aim of enhancing their well-being.

 

There are two wards for people with a dementia related illness who have behavioural and psychiatric symptoms requiring highly specialist care.

 

Both wards (one male with19 beds, and one female with16 beds) provide continuous multidisciplinary assessment for people who meet the admission criteria for Extended Psychiatric Assessment, and are also considered eligible for NHS funded Continuing Healthcare.

 

These wards also provide rotational respite care for patients with high level need who are cared for at home.  This gives their carers a regular two week break from the caring role.

 

Once patients’ behaviour and psychiatric symptoms resolve, and they are assessed as no longer requiring specialist psychiatric in-patient services, then longer term placement in the community will be facilitated.  Carers will be supported in choosing the right care home to meet their relatives’ ongoing social and health care needs. 

 

The third ward has 10 beds for people with enduring mental health problems who require specialist rehabilitation mental health services. The focus of this service is on promoting recovery and reablement towards supported community living.

 

Both specialities work in partnership to manage the unit.
