The Department of Echocardiography provides a specialist service in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular and thoracic disease. This covers cardiology, adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), and cardiothoracic surgery.
The Echo Department is based within the Cardiac Physiology Department, located off the link corridor between wards B1 and C1. Most of the outpatient tests are performed within this area. We aim to provide a comprehensive, efficient service for our patients and are committed to excellence. We have dedicated sessions specifically for the type of echo required, with pre-booked appointment times. However, most of the tests offered can also take place at patient bedsides in certain circumstances.
Our Staff
Echocardiography is ultrasound examination of the heart. The Echocardiography Department is one of the busiest within cardiology. The Clinical Head of the department is Consultant Cardiologist, Dr Navroz Masani. There are two other Echo Consultants who frequently work within the department, and there may at times be several other doctors present during the tests as part of their pre-Consultant training.
The majority of the transthoracic work is carried out by nine skilled cardiac physiologists, most with British Society of Echocardiography accreditation. Additional support is also provided by cardiology specialist registrars.
Tests
In addition to transthoracic echo we perform transoesophageal studies, stress echo, saline and contrast studies and 3D echo reconstruction within the unit.
