Arrhythmia Nurse Specialist

The Arrhythmia Nurse acts as a dedicated point of contact and advocate for patients within Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan with heart rhythm problems such as Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disturbance encountered by doctors. It can affect adults of any age, but it is more common as people get older. In the over 65 year old age group, it affects about 10% of people. Atrial fibrillation is not a life-threatening heart rhythm problem, but it can be troublesome and often requires treatment.

There is close collaboration with the consultant electrophysiologists, cardiac physiologists, and the arrhythmia nurse specialist.

Services include:
  • support and information for patients presenting with arrhythmias, ensuring they receive timely assessment and diagnosis, effective treatment and rehabilitation for their condition,
  • nurse-led outpatient clinics for new and follow-up patients with a range of arrhythmias including Atrial Fibrillation, Atrial Flutter and Wolf Parkinson White,
  • co-ordination of Direct Current Cardioversion service (electric shock treatment to restore normal rhythm) as a day case procedure to treat Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter,
  • provision of a comprehensive pre and post assessment service for patients undergoing Electrophysiology Studies (EPS), and Pulmonary Vein Isolation Ablation (PVI) (a thin wire, guided under local anaesthetic through a vein into the heart, using an electric current to record and correct abnormal activity to restore normal rhythm),
  • access to office hours telephone for support and advice
  • continued education and support through verbal explanation and written patient information leaflets.
