Referral
The Community services run an open referral system (referrals are accepted from any source) for Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan residents for:
- Drug Stabilisation programs (usually with methadone and buprenorphine), which may include GP shared care
- Access to Adfer Inpatient Unit
- Drug and Alcohol Detoxification
- Relapse Prevention
- Evidence based therapies
- Keyworking of complex problems usually related to substance misuse
Professional referrals should by letter, detailing substance misuse, and other relevant information, and should be addressed to
CAU – CARDIFF and CAU – VALE (see contact us page). Self referrals are preferred, in person, on a Friday afternoon at both CAU – CARDIFF and CAU – VALE ( see contact us page)

Needle Exchange
NO referral is needed to access this service. Cardiff and Vale CAU sites offer traditional ‘pick and mix’ needle exchanges with a wide range equipment and experienced staff on hand.
See also Needle Exchange for the other sites offered around Cardiff and in the Vale of Glamorgan
Overdose Training and Emergency Naloxone Provision
We recommend all opioid users (heroin and related drugs), especially injectors, take up this training, and obtain emergency naloxone. Naloxone has saved many users’ lives locally
Referrals can be made in person through our needle exchanges, through keyworkers, and through many other local agencies.
