Needle Exchange
Why?
Needle exchange services aim to:
- Prevent transmission of blood borne viruses (BBVs) between injecting drug users through the provision of sterile injecting equipment in sufficient quantities to allow for clean equipment to be used for each injecting event
- Prevent transmission of BBVs between injecting drug users through the provision of information on the risks associated with sharing injecting equipment and advice on routes of drug ingestion other than injecting (route transition)
- Provide a means of safe disposal of used injecting equipment
- Reduce sexual transmission of BBVs between through safer sex information and the provision of condoms
- Increase awareness of the risks and harms related to injecting drug use including bacterial infection, overdose etc
